September is Suicide Awareness Month

September is a month where we should be getting back into the routine of school and recovering from summer and getting ready for fall. September is also a month to raise awareness about Suicide. Depression is serious and when somebody becomes so depressed they are contemplating suicide, they are sending up a major red flag. I am going to interpret it through a song I love dearly. September is almost over and to everyone who has made it to the next day I am proud of you.

One of my favorite artist’s Billy Joe Armstrong, front man of Green Day once said “The second day is always better.”  I believe that it is true. Even in my darkest days the second day was better in one way or another. For those of you who may be tired of seeing suicide prevention posts or happy that people are taking the time to acknowledge it, take a moment to think if there is anybody in your life that you know that is in a dark place. Call them or shoot them a text and just say “hey how are you doing today?” For many of us we want the day, the month or the year to be over with. Reasons being something bad happened in that month that you want to forget and therefore you want the whole month to fly by as quickly as possible. There is a song by Green Day that tells a story of pain and wanting the month of September to be over. The song Wake Me Up When September Ends simply means just that.

“Wake Me Up When September Ends”

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

elizabeth10.12.14<3 : the innocent can never last- because they are always the ones holding everything in to keep everyone else sane and happy. Where the ones who are always helping others are the ones who hurt the most inside and the most depressed which sometimes leads to self harm, drug abuse, and suicide. Whatever month it may be we want it to end. We want our pain to end.

Like my father’s come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

elizabeth10.12.14<3 : This talks about the death of a loved one who’s been gone for a long time and must have died in September. This could also resemble “father come to pass” a possibility that the father figure walked out on the family and the eldest child had to become man of the house and take care of everybody.

Here comes the rain again                                                      Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

elizabeth10.12.14<3 : “here comes the rain again” can resemble rain but it could also resemble tears. “stars” could be a symbol of eyes because sometimes “eyes twinkle like stars”. Obviously this person is full of pain and sorrow. Depressed maybe even contemplating ending his own life. But with each day moving forward, progress is made and starts to recover but doesn’t forget what was lost that pain will always be there.

Summer has come and passed                                                   The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father’s come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

elizabeth10.12.14<3 : here many years have gone past and the wait till september is over still remains. The pain is still there but that person never gave up on their life. Because they know that “the second day is always better”

Watching Billy Joe perform this song live is breath taking and a very emotional experience for him and for the audience. He takes you to those moments of his life where he hurt the most and you can see it in his expression and feel it through the way the music is played and can hear it through how he sings the song. It is empowering and breath taking.

Everyone I ask you to call up that person you know that might be going through a tough time or alone in the dark and say that you are there for them. Being in the dark is not the place to be. Even though I struggle still to get out of the dark from time to time. And if you ever suspect that there is a possibility that theres a chance that could hurt themselves go for help. And spread the word on SUICIDE AWARENESS.

“Suicide does not end the chances of life getting worse. Suicide eliminates the possibility of ever getting better”
